An exotic, invasive species found throughout eastern North America. Originally imported from Europe in the 1800's for use as an ornamental hedge. Escaped cultivation and now is an invasive that outcompetes native plants and often dominates the forest understory. Very difficult to eradicated after becoming established. Leaves are dark green with toothed edges which remain on the branches late into the fall. Dioecious plants with female plants producing abundant round black berry-like fruit that is favored by birds. Noticable small 'spine' located at the tip of branches in an identifying characteristic and source of the common name
