Native tree in Eastern North America with a unique palmate compound leaf. Leaves typically have 5 leaflets all attached to the tip of the petiole. Medium sized tree reaching a height of 20 - 40 ft at maturity which is often planted as a specimen or boulevard tree. Notable fruit in the fall is a round capsule containing one or two buckeye seeds. Seeds are a shiny brown color with an obvious tan colored 'eye'. Poisonous seeds are avoided by wildlife. Traditional folklore has favored carrying buckeye seeds to bring good luck or to ward off rheumatism.
