Zone: 4 - 8
The most widely distributed native birch tree ranges from Canada southward to the cooler and mountainous regions of the United States. Paper birch is an understory tree that favors cool, moist locations and is the iconic standout species in the northern woodlands. It grows to height of 50 - 70 ft at maturity. Because of its notable white bark it is often called White Birch or Canoe Birch and it has been used by Native Americans for construction of canoes, shelters and utensils. Commonly used as an ornamental landscape tree because of its yellow fall color and white bark. Unfortunately it is highly susceptible to the bronze birch borer which can kill a tree weakened by harsh winters.
